I have had several surgeries and my carrier is Assurant. So far they have covered literally nothing and I am stuck with having to set up financing to pay my bills. Having health insurance with Assurant is like having no insurance at all. I strongly recommend never using Assurant. I have written letters and they say they are reviewing the situation. Meanwhile, collection agencies have come after me due to non payment. Sat away from Assurant is my recommendation.

I used Assurant Health for almost a year until last month when I canceled. Well, I never really used it as I’m young, married and we’re both extremely healthy. We’re students and sit in the basement reading all day. In essence, we are their ideal customer.
However once I moved from Nevada to Oregon it not only took them 6 months to finally transfer my records, they more then DOUBLED my premium. Which is fine I guess if they had at least TOLD me. I received no kind of letter explaining my plan or payments were changing until I was halfway through the payment cycle when I randomly called them up to see what was going on. And even after being on the phone with them for 2 hours they still never gave me a straight answer or explanation on why they had to double my premium. I told the idiots to transfer me to cancellations and dropped them. The price they were charging me was more then I would pay by just going to the doctor when I needed to and pay full price. Now that makes a whole lot of sense doesn’t it? Oh, and their customer service blows. They were rude, unhelpful and transferred us about 10 times to one more “I can’t do anything” person.
To wrap things up, Just STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY.

Stay away from this company. They are corrupt. They have denied payment for my cancer treatment falsely claiming that it was a “preexisting condition.” I have always had health insurance and never had any symptoms let alone treatment for cancer prior to this claim.
I investigated this company and found out that Assurant has a history of automatically denying ANY claim for a catastrophic illness stating that it is a “preexisting condition.” Assurant (formerly Fortis) was successfully sued in South Carolina and had a $15 million dollar penalty assessed against them.
The state of Connecticut has also found their denial of claims to be unethical, but the head of that state’s Department of Insurance worked out a nice deal for Assurant which only requires them to reimburse subscribers that were fraudulently denied coverage. The Connecticut Attorney General was outraged that no punitive action was taken against them.
If you think you have been unfairly denied coverage by this company, make sure you file a complaint with your state’s insurance department, contact your state and federal legislators, speak up.

Assurant. Oh boy. I tried them for 6 months. I paid them $110 each month. When I needed medical service. They offered me only $2 back. I will repeat that. I gave them $660 over 6 months and they offered to give me $2 when I got sick. I was beyond outraged, and I dropped them. I am currently without any health insurance. At least, I can keep my own money!!!
I can’t tell you how much I hate these thieves.

I have had Assurant and have found that they pay just as the policy says they would. I have a high deductible to keep my payments lower and expect to pay for the little stuff. I have not had a catastrophic incident as yet, so I cannot comment on that.
My prior insurance company paid as they said they would also … we just want more than is offered. I am grateful for my health, no question. To those who have serious conditions, I can’t know what you go thru.

We recently switched from Assurant. We use an HSA plan, so our deductible is high, and our premium started out low: $250/mo for a family, $4,200/yr deductible.
After the first year they started raising the rates. They can raise them more often than annually, so they did. They raised them regardless of the fact that we’re healthy people, making few claims. The one time we really needed their assistance, we didn’t get it. Our son, then 2 years old, had a respiratory infection and at half past midnight our doctor told us to go to a particular emergency room which they participate with. After we got the bill, they told us that they only participate up UNTIL midnight, so instead of $350, the bill was over $1,700. But since this was all within our deductible, Assurant would not help us dispute the bill (neither would our doctor, or Children’s Hospital)
So meanwhile the premiums went up every few months, eventually reaching over $600 per mo., and we switched to another carrier, still with an HSA. Our new premium? $292/mo.
